Clinical Research
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the proportion of visits for the prescribing of ACEI or ARBs in diabetic subjects between the years 2001/2002 and 2008/2009 and within various demographic factors. There was an increase in the proportion of visits from 2001/2002 to 2008/2009 with 17.7 percent of subjects receiving a prescription for ACEI/ARB in 2001/2002 versus 37.3 percent in 2008/2009 odds ratio (OR) equal to 2.7 (95 percent CI 2.2 to 3.4). Diabetic patients are receiving and increased number of prescriptions for an ACEI/ARB in more recent years. Although an increase was seen, the findings highlight the need to consider future research aimed at identifying the underlying reasons for the disparity in the treatment of diabetic patients.
