Title: Association Between Calcium/Vitamin D Supplementation with Breast Cancer Diagnosis in Women
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Charles Carter , Clinical Research and Dr. Michael Jiroutek , College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
There are conflicting published studies regarding the association of dairy consumption, vitamin D and calcium supplementation and the risk of developing breast cancer. The study’s aim was to determine if an association between vitamin D and calcium supplementation with breast cancer diagnosis exists amongst women that participated in NHANES. This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study. Women ≥ 20 years of age that participated in NHANES (2007-2014, inclusive) were eligible. There was a direct positive association between calcium and vitamin D supplementation with breast cancer diagnosis in all analyses. While the data suggests a potential association, further research is warranted.
