Title: Pedagogical Lab Development: Building the Bond between Chemistry and Art
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Sarah Goforth and Dr. Cindy Morefield , College of Arts & Sciences

Pedagogical labs highlighting the connection between chemical processes and artistic applications are being further developed. Pigments were synthesized and tested in various paint media including egg-yolk, acrylics, watercolor, and waxes. Fresco production procedures were optimized with respect to thickness, drying-time, and pigment application. Embossed patinas of varying color and quality were produced through oxidation of copper with ammonia and various NaX salts (X = Cl, Br, I) in differing ratios. A variety of masks were applied to brass disks to determine their efficacy in preventing copper reactivity. All of the aforementioned processes were developed into teaching labs for CHEM 105L/442L.
