Title: Pyelonephritis: Case Report with Discussion of Predisposing Factors and Clinical Implications
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Maxx Toler , School of Osteopathic Medicine
Pyelonephritis develops from ascending urinary tract infections and leads to potentially lethal inflammation of the kidney and renal pelvis. Contributing risk factors include female gender, advanced age, and diabetes mellitus. This case study of a 94-year-old Caucasian female whose causes of death were listed as pneumonia, emphysema, diabetes, and dementia exemplifies presentation of pyelonephritis. Dissection of the right kidney exposed lesions that upon histological examination revealed inflammation containing intralesional bacilli. This poster explores predisposing factors for developing bacterial pyelonephritis and outlines preventative medical practices which can aid in proactive recognition within this patient population.
