Title: Liver Cancer with Review of Risk Factors
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Bonnie Brenseke , School of Osteopathic Medicine

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer deaths. The high occurrence is partly due to increased prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). During cadaveric dissection of an 88-year-old Caucasian female, multiple liver nodules were discovered. Samples were collected and fixed in 10% NBF. Routine histologic processing was performed. The resultant slides, containing 5μm-thick H&E stained sections, were evaluated by light microscopy, establishing a diagnosis of HCC. Findings suggest this individual was at risk for HCC due to obesity, cirrhosis, diabetes, and NAFLD.
