Title: The Risk of Herb-Drug Interations Among Patients in Select North Carolina Clinics
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Pius Fasinu , College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences
We obtained Campbell University's IRB approval to evaluate the risk of herb-drug interactions (HDI) among patients visiting select clinics in North Carolina. Studies and clinical case reports have shown that the concomitant consumption of certain herbal medications and prescription drugs do precipitate adverse HDI. A total of 70 patients consented and participated in this study. Among patients using herb-drug combination, 16.4% were evaluated to be at significant risk for HDI, while 12.3% was assessed with probable HDI risk. It is important that health professionals and patients are aware of the risks of HDI, and when to avoid concomitant herb-drug use.
