Title: Syrian Refugees and Their Attempts at Return
Developed under the guidance of Dr. James Martin , History
"Abstract: In this paper, Brandon Davis will discuss how the Syrian conflict quickly morphed into a worldwide humanitarian crisis as many individuals began to flee for their lives when the Islamic State, President Assad, and insurgents clashed. Rebels protesting at a school led to the murder of some of these individuals. This event contributed to the Islamic State gaining a foothold in Syria, adding yet another crisis for the Assad regime to manage. With help from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, the Syrian government expelled the Islamic State. Through negotiations with other countries, Syria was able to convince its citizens to return to their homeland and reclaim the lives they once lived. Many of the former expatriates have been able to “normalize” their daily existence, while others are still reeling from atrocities. Due to their lives being placed on hold while the war took place, many adults and children suffer from PTSD, retain scars and injuries and lack sufficient educational opportunities. "
