Title: Prevalence Study: Pigmented Skin Lesions in Individuals Aged 65 and Older
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Adam Foster and Dr. Bonnie Brenseke , Osteopathic Medicine
The purpose of the study was to differentiate between various pigmented skin lesions in individuals aged 65 and older in a population of medical cadavers and compare our data with prevalence studies from other populations. Secondly, we sought to identify the frequency of benign versus malignant origins with the anticipation of uncovering malignancies. Pigmented skin lesions are prevalent dermatological findings in geriatric (65+) populations. Consistent with expectations, seborrheic keratosis (SK) was the most common benign finding (43%). No malignancies were found. We discuss these findings, place them into context with contemporary medical procedures, and offer suggestions for best practices.
