Title: Experimental Evaluation of Deck Screws

The purpose of this project was to determine the manner in which deck screws are made as well as the materials they’re made out of. By mounting, etching, and viewing samples under a microscope we were able to determine the grain structure as well as the mode of production. From the grain structure we determined that the screws were made of a steel alloy with a bainite grain structure. Compressed areas within the grains suggested that the threads were pressed instead of cut.
