WML Academic Symposium Presentation Guidelines
The 2017 Academic Symposium will take place on Thursday, March 30, 2017. For the second year, judges will evaluate presentations and posters, and awards will be given for outstanding work.
- Posters may be mounted between 6:00pm Wednesday, March 29 and 9:00am Thursday, March 30.
- Presenters should plan to stand by their posters and answer questions between 4:00pm and 5:15pm on the day of the Symposium. Be prepared to give a 3- to 5-minute summary of your research to your audience.
- Boards and pins for mounting posters will be provided.
- For tips on designing your poster, attend the Designing an Effective Research Poster workshop.
- The library will provide one free poster printing for interested Symposium participants. Reprints will cost $8.
- If printing in the Library, submit the final draft of your poster to the CMMC staff via this online submission form by the extended deadline, noon, Friday, March 24. If using the library poster printer, poster dimensions may be no larger than 36in x 48in.
- Oral presentations will take place in a classroom setting with the presenter(s) at the front of the room.
- A computer and projector will be available.
- Each student or group will be granted 20 minutes to present: 15 minutes to speak and 5 minutes for questions. Be sure to practice your timing; the schedule must be enforced to accommodate the presenters before and after you.
- A moderator will track your time and give you a 3-minute warning during your presentation.
- Limit your presentation to what you can cover effectively in 15 minutes, so that you don't have to speak too fast or skip anything.
- You are encouraged to reserve a study room and rehearse prior to the Symposium. It may be helpful to invite individuals who can provide objective feedback.
- For tips on presenting, attend the Delivering a Polished Paper Presentation workshop and/or the Creating an Engaging Oral/Slide Presentation workshop.
- Bring any visual tools with you to your presentation on a USB drive (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.).
- Keep a copy of your presentation in your email as a backup.
Performing Arts Presentations/Art Exhibits
- Artwork and exhibits may be dropped off between 6:00pm Wednesday, March 29 and 9:00am Thursday, March 30.
- Performances will take place in Turner Auditorium (D. Rich Hall). Contact Sarah Steele, Associate Dean of the Library and Head of Research and Instruction Services, with any instrument and setup needs.
- Performances may last up to 15 minutes with 5 additional minutes for questions from the audience.
