Title: "El Recado" by Elena Poniatowska - Women's Rights in Latin America and How They've Changed (Presented in Spanish)
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Rene Ibarra , Spanish
The story “El Recado” by Elena Poniatowska takes place in the ‘60s, and describes a woman that is inactive and writing while the man she pines for is active and about. She has been sitting at his place for the entire day, watching people go by and taking care of his home in his absence. As she waits, she laments that a woman’s role seems to revolve around waiting for a man, and how society deems women to be weaker. In this presentation, I will discuss how this story pertains to women’s rights in Latin America at the time and how they have changed to what they are today.
