Title: Mass Spectrometer based C-14 Dating of Indigenous Artifacts
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Jason Ezell , Chemistry

The department’s TSQ 7000 mass spectrometer was used to conduct measurements of the relative abundance of Carbon 12 and the radioactive Carbon 14 isotope to determine the age of pottery shards found at an archeological site near the North Carolina coast. The instrument required several modifications as well as the development of specialized techniques to convert carbon samples to the gaseous state.
