History

This research dives into Mexican immigration and how it morphs the family structure. Most families leave their homes for a better life and because of this many changes occur. There are a few negative results from immigration, including loss of extended family, depression especially evident with children, dual parental employment, lack of parental supervision, and discrimination. However, the positive aspects include improved education for children, more economic opportunities, biculturalism, and the creation of a new family role for children. Many of the sources utilized include personal interviews with immigrants and studies on family structures, along with historical and cultural texts. This paper provides valuable information to help spread an understanding of reasons why Mexican families immigrate and how immigration affects the family system.
